Who Needs a SIM?
Anyone who wants to drive in Bali needs a local Indonesian driving license, or SIM (Surat Izin Mengemudi):
- Indonesian citizens: Can drive anywhere in Indonesia with a SIM
- Foreign residents: Can drive anywhere in Indonesia with a SIM if they have a temporary stay permit (KITAS) or permanent stay permit (KITAP)
- Foreign tourists: Can drive in Bali with an international driving license, but only under certain conditions
Types of SIM Available
In Indonesia, there are four primary categories of driver’s licenses, officially referred to as Surat Izin Mengemudi (SIM), each designed to authorize individuals to operate different types of vehicles in accordance with local traffic regulations:
- SIM A: For personal use automobiles or vehicles that weigh less than 3,500 kilograms
